Dentures vs. Partials: Which Is Right for You?

If you're missing teeth — whether a few or all of them — you've probably heard the terms "dentures" and "partials" thrown around. They're related, but they're not the same thing, and choosing the right option makes a real difference in how you feel, eat, and smile every day.
Here's a straightforward breakdown.
What Are Full Dentures?
Full dentures (also called complete dentures) replace all of your teeth on the upper arch, lower arch, or both. They rest on your gums and are removed for cleaning. If you've lost all or most of your natural teeth due to decay, gum disease, or injury, full dentures are typically the right path.
There are two main types:
Conventional dentures — made after your remaining teeth are removed and your gums have healed, usually 8–12 weeks after extraction.
Immediate dentures — made in advance and placed the same day as your extractions, so you're never without teeth during healing.
What Are Partial Dentures?
Partial dentures are used when you still have some healthy natural teeth remaining. They clip onto your existing teeth and fill in the gaps with replacement teeth. Partials prevent your remaining teeth from shifting into the empty spaces, which can cause bite problems and additional tooth loss over time.
Partials are removable, like full dentures, and should be taken out at night for cleaning.
How Do You Know Which One You Need?
The answer depends on how many natural teeth you have left — and their condition.
Still have several healthy teeth? → Partials are likely the right fit.
Lost most or all of your teeth? → Full dentures are the better option.
Have some teeth but they're severely decayed or damaged? → Extractions followed by full dentures or immediate dentures may be recommended.
The only way to know for sure is a dental exam. Dr. Hoover will evaluate your remaining teeth, your bone structure, and your goals, and walk you through the options before any decisions are made.
